Wyre Forest Greens campaign against "Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership"
Wyre Forest Green Party is concerned that a secret trade deal between the EU and USA could erode the democratic rights of Wyre Forest residents.
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is currently being negotiated in secret between the USA and the EU. Its stated purpose is to stimulate trade by removing regulatory tariff barriers.
This sweeping away of bureaucratic red tape might seem like a good idea to some, but many others are concerned that its effect will be to downgrade our environmental regulations and worsen our social standards. This will mean that regulations on food safety (including GMOs), chemicals (including removing the ban on asbestos), workers’ rights, digital privacy and banking standards will all be renegotiated to bring them in to line with the more ‘relaxed’ USA.
Most worrying of all, TTIP will now allow foreign investors to sue individual nations for the loss of any future profits resulting from their governments’ policy decisions. If the UK government, for instance, decided to ban fracking in Wyre Forest, it could be sued by any company that had already conducted exploratory drilling in the area. Even more worrying is that the legal process would take place in secretive courts with the power to levy massive fines paid for by UK taxpayers.
TTIP presents a very real threat to the sovereignty of all nations and it is astonishing that all three main parties publicly support the treaty. UKIP is strangely silent on TTIP. Surely the party which claims to care about our national sovereignty should oppose this major threat to our democracy?
